Oaxaca City - wundervoll -- beautiful

Wir sind seit drei Tagen in Oaxaca (der Stadt), haben also nach vielen Wochen am Meer die Kueste hinter uns gelassen und sind hoch hoch in die Berge, ueber einen 2600m Pass und dann in die Hocheben in deren Mitte Oaxaca liegt.
Welch eine herrliche Stadt, wir koennten uns beide gut vorstellen eine Weile hier zu leben: bunte Haeuser, ruhige Gassen, viele Galerien, Museen und Kneipen, viel Musik, Druckkunst, Malerei, Skulpturen und traditionelles Handwerk. Wir haben es geliebt hier stundenlang durch die Gassen zu schlendern und zu entdecken, ohne Plan und Ziel.
Schon vor 2500 Jahren wussten die Menschen diese Gegend hier zu schaetzen: die Zapoteken beherrschten 500 v.Chr. halb Mexico vom Monte Alban aus, dem Stadtberg wenige Kilometer ausserhalb des heutigen Zentrums. Dies war eine der ersten und maechtigsten Hochkulturen von Mexico, spaeter folgten Mayas und Azteken.

Since 3 days we are in Oaxaca City, have finally left the coast for the mountains, climbing over a 2600m pass (=8000feet!) and then dropping back down into the high valleys in which middle lies this fabulous town of Oaxaca.
A beautiful place, we could both easily imagine living here for a while: colourfully painted houses, quiet placas and pedestrian areas, lots of galleries, museums, bars, coffee shops with music, arts, paintings, sculptures and traditional craftsmanship all over the place. We just loved strolling around without goal or map, discovering....
Humans seem to always have found a special liking for this area: already 2500 years ago the Zapotecs ruled their kingdom from the Monte Alban, the local mountain few kilometers out of town. It was one of the first and biggest kingdoms of Mexico, the better-known Mayas and Aztecs followed much later...
